Welcome to the NIHR Leadership Programme - supporting and developing health research leaders

The Leadership Programme is an 18 month process of development, focused on individual practice (not learning in the classroom). The spotlight is on how you actually lead - and what you can do to get more of the results you want.

Health research is now a big and complex business. Many leaders lead large teams and have multi-million pound budgets. They manage relationships with universities and hospital trusts, commissioners and primary care, public and industry. They deal with multiple jobs, bosses and measures. Yet many research leaders have little, if any, development in leadership. The programme aims to fill that gap.

The programme has been specially developed with Ashridge business school. It is tailored to the needs of research leaders. And the programme is a big one. Over 3 ½ years, 400 current and future research leaders will participate.

Participants' Feedback

“I just wanted to thank Sally and Ashridge Consulting for the opportunity of working on developing my leadership skills. It has been such a privilege to work with an Ashridge Consultant who I respect and who has a huge amount of experience from working with organisations.”

“I have gone on a journey from being an unconscious leader to a conscious leader.”

“I see myself now as a leader, not someone trying to sort it all out for others.”

“The board meeting this morning is the first one [in 4 years] that I have enjoyed.”

“I was wrong to say I couldn’t change. I can see now that I can easily be misinterpreted. I will be aware of this in future.”

“The [NIHR] community building is very valuable.”

“The ‘me time’ has for me been the most valuable thing. I have had wonderful support and guidance to handle the stresses and strains that you experience as a research leader.”

“The Action Learning group was remarkably helpful. My colleague gave me the most qualified and expert feedback I have ever had.”

“I know I am immensely privileged to be part of this programme. It is a very unusual opportunity. I am learning how to get a life and be part of Sally’s army.”

“I found the meeting in Ashridge invigorating. Instead of seeking to tell us how to lead, Ashridge seeks to help us discover what it is we need to do.”

“I did not know how creative the 360 feedback process could be.”

“My friends are really jealous when I tell them about the programme. It’s a phenomenal experience.”

“The most important thing is to have personal reflection time.”
